Following its re-opening for business in June, Stream Marine Training (SMT) has been pleased by the positive uptake of its STCW safety critical courses which shows that there is a lot of pent-up demand in the market.
These courses are STCW approved, many of them being mandatory for core crew on merchant vessels, and contain a mix of practically based elements at SMT’s facility in Glasgow backed up with webinar led theory lessons.
SMT’s sites have been carefully re-opened with new stringent new policies in place that comply with the HSE, MCA and Government guidelines to keep delegates and staff safe. Social distancing is strictly maintained with one way systems clearly marked to navigate safely around the sites and touchless hand-washing stations have been installed at strategic locations and in classrooms.
Webinar led Personal Safety and Responsibility (PSSR) and Security Awareness online lessons will complement the practical hands-on courses such as Elementary First Aid (EFA), Proficiency in Personal Survival Techniques (PST) in SMT’s pool and fire-fighting training which takes place at SMT’s open-air fire grounds at Glasgow International Airport.
This innovative approach applies to the Refresher cycle too which will now begin with an advanced fire-fighting update webinar course before attending Proficiency in Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boat (PSCRB), Proficiency in Personal Survival Techniques (PST) and Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boat (FRB) updating courses.
Development training will also soon be available but at the moment SMT felt it was important to focus on key worker safety critical training only.
“This blended learning approach also gives total flexibility for the trainees who can choose which days they want to visit the site for the practical exercises and when to take the theoretical content using the live webinars,” said Alex Ponomarev, SMT’s Sales Director.
“Using webinars in this way has the benefit of not only minimising social interaction to impede the spread of the virus but it also reduces the amount of time students need to be present at the company’s training centre by a complete day for both sets of courses. This significantly reduces client accommodation and travel costs,” he added.
All the listed STCW courses running over webinars are approved by both the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and Bahamas Maritime Authority (BMA).
