BWLPG delivers 1st ship to ship parcel of Propane fuel to WAPA

The U.S. Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority's (WAPA) have turned to the conversion to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) as a primary source of fuel in a new project for electrical power generation.

With fuel oil prices rising and their dependency on it becoming less feasible, the islands were seeking alternative, clean burning fuels. As the primary source of water, power production and distribution in the U.S. Virgin Islands, WAPA has set a new model for other island power authorities and small utilities serving confined areas to consider adapting. Their conversion to LPG for electrical power generation is the first project of its kind and hopes to pave a new path for clean, affordable power.
As part of this project, BW LPG's Very Large Gas Carrier Berge Summit successfully delivered the first ship to ship parcel of Propane fuel to an off take vessel, the 'Epic Curacao', on 18 October 2016. The entire operation took a little over 12 hours.
On 2nd of October, WAPA authorities released a statement stating that project testing was on track. WAPA Executive Director / CEO Julio A. Rhymer, Sr. said last week that at one point during the commissioning, Unit 20 was running 100% on propane producing as much as 20 megawatts of electrical power. “Once the testing is completed, Unit 20 will continue to burn LPG to power St. Croix and technicians will shift the focus to commissioning the other units." BW LPG believes in the future of LPG as a clean fossil fuel and is proud to be a part of this pioneer project by WAPA by delivering clean energy for electrical power generation.
