European Union Maritime Policy & its Effect on the European and Global Merchant Fleet
Shipping is a global industry and thus subject to regulations from global regulatory organizations. At the same time, the European union is pursuing its own policies. The EU controls about 40% of the global tonnage with the Greek owned fleet accounting for more than half of this. EU policies should ensure the competitiveness of EU shipping compared to other clusters while harmonizing with those of the global organizations, thereby providing the industry with a unified and flexible regulatory context.

Furthermore, increased competition among shipyards offering attractive packages adds to the newbuilding dilemma. What is the best way to achieve the decarbonization targets by 2030 or 2050 which is the next frontier? At present there are several proposals on the table for discussion at the IMO.
