PSYCTOTHERM is the winner of the Lloyds 2020 award for Technical Achievement for the development of an innovative ORC marine unit.
The company made the following announcement: "This Award is a great honor for our company and a great motive for us to continue through this difficult period.
One of the main needs of shipping companies is the en- hancement of energy efficiency of their fleet, in order to: (1) reduce fuel consumption and its cost and (2) comply with the limits for the greenhouse gases and pollutant emissions of international regulations.
Since vessels have a great amount of waste heat, a spe- cialized marine ORC unit can be ideal to recover it and transform it into electricity. The concept was also awarded a Seal of Excellence, by the European Commission, during Horizon 2020 evaluation process and is currently co-fund- ed by EPAnEK 2014-2020 (research project ORC4SHIP) in collaboration with DANAOS research center.
An engine that utilizes the Rankine Organic Cycle (ORC) has proven to be the most efficient technology for recov- ering low-temperature heat dissipation and converting it into electricity. Psyctotherm has developed an ORC unit, which its main innovation is that the expansion takes place in a process that tends to be isothermal. Based on this principle, a significantly improved thermal efficiency rate (up to 20%) can be achieved compared to convention- al ORCs, while at the same time its design considers the specific requirements of the marine industry.
By adopting this technology to the marine industry, a re- duction in ship fuel consumption of up to 3-4% can occur, as well as a reduction in CO2 and other harmful emissions (NOx, SOx, etc.). The first ORC with application in shipping will soon be installed together with the DANAOS research center on a DANAOS SHIPPING vessel.
At this point it is important to mention that as we are in a general spirit of a total upgrade. Our R&D department is now working on a complete redesign of our products, to achieve energy savings with lower power consumption, using technologies such as inverter or digital compres- sors / EEV / EC fans / IoT smart controllers.
To conclude, we are now moving our production facilities to a new building specially designed for the placement of all machinery in a flat area of 1260 square meters, looking forward to increase our production capacity, improve the quality and minimize the delivery time. All these, always under the goals of development, collaboration, and trust, meanings that represent us and lead us to the future".
