Industry renowned marine fuel expert, Bill Stamatopoulos, from Bureau Veritas’ VeriFuel team, gave a lecture to some 100 final-year students and faculty
from the engineering department of the Merchant Marine Academy of Michaniona on May 12, 2016.
The seminar, concerning marine fuels, is an annual event for graduating students at one of Greece’s biggest maritime training institutions, before they enter the shipping industry as third-engineers.
Bill Stamatopoulos has been lecturing at the Academy since 2004, responding to the need to update the next wave of engineer’s on the latest bunker-related challenges.
Marine fuel issues are constantly evolving as well as the increasingly complex relationship between environmental regulations, quality developments and operational safety and efficiency. In this regard, the VeriFuel lecture serves as an important supplement to the formal training the engineering students have received.
Upon entering the industry, shipboard personnel should undergo regular competence assessment and continual training to keep abreast of changes in the operating environment.
Crew competence in managing fuel is paramount to safe and efficient ship operations.
Bureau Veritas VeriFuel commits to marine fuel management training in Greek maritime academies to help ensure the next generation of engineers are best position to tackle the challenges faced in this dynamic industry.
