Official Visit to Cyprus by the President of ICS

In view of the official visit to Cyprus by the President of the International Chamber of Shipping, Mr. Esben Poulsson, the Cyprus Shipping Chamber as the official representative

of the resident Shipping Industry in Cyprus at the International Chamber of Shipping, organised a Special Members' Meeting on Monday, 7 November 2016, 17:00 hours, at the Amathus Beach Hotel, in Limassol, where the main speaker was Mr. Poulsson.

During the course of his speech, the President of the International Chamber of Shipping referred to the aims and objectives of the ICS and to the important role it performs in the international shipping scene. In addition, Mr. Poulsson emphasised the active role of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber in the different internal committees of ICS, and its important contribution to the current shipping matters faced by the international shipping industry. Mr. Poulsson referred to the future challenges faced by the stakeholders in shipping, such as, the continuous efforts to reduce CO2 emissions from ships, the challenges associated with the need for ships trading to Emission Control Areas, in North America and Europe, to switch to low sulphur fuel and the serious implementation problems that will be created by the eventual entry into force of the IMO Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention. Mr. Poulsson referred also to the maintenance and enhancement of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) as the competent body for the application of international shipping regulations, and the need to enhance further the Image of Shipping.   

During his visit in Cyprus, the President of the ICS, who was accompanied by the ICS Secretary General, Mr. Peter Hinchliffe, met with the President of the Cyprus Parliament, Mr. Demetris Syllouris and the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Mr. Marios Demetriades. All these meetings, especially the Special Meeting organised by the Cyprus Shipping Chamber, provided a unique opportunity for the President of the ICS to realise the huge amplitude and the significant infrastructure of the Shipping Industry in Cyprus as well as the multifaceted work and activities of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber.
