On 25 October 1935 the idea of establishing the International Propeller Club of the United States in Piraeus became a reality.
Today, 85 years later, we celebrate the club’s continued and continuous significant impact on Greek and global shipping issues. Today, more than ever, the club provides an energetic forum for the exchange of opinion between its members and between various organisations and institutions involved in the general economy, trade and industry, and the maritime industry. The Propeller Club of Piraeus plays an important role in promoting close relationships and understanding between Greece and the United States of America. The club is strongly philanthropic, relying solely on the contributions of its members.
For 85 years now, the Propeller Club particularly supports organisations and individuals in the Greek maritime industry, an important pillar in the national economy and a leading force in global shipping.
“Today, more than ever, we are committed to creating a better future,” said Costis J. Frangoulis, President of the Board of Governors, “A better future for shipping. A better future for Greece. A better future for the environment. A better future for all of us, especially for our children.”
On the occasion of this important anniversary, the club’s Board of Governors convened on Thursday 22 October 2020 at the Yacht Club of Greece in Piraeus. This was the Board’s first physical meeting after 9 months of virtual conferences as a result of the pandemic.
During the meeting, Mr. Frangoulis emphasised the significance of the club’s long history in Greece and its contribution, especially during these challenging times. The meeting was followed by a celebratory dinner complete with a birthday cake.
On Sunday, 25 October, a group of Propeller Club members, together with Costis Frangoulis and a number of members of the Board of Governors, cleaned up Votsalakia Beach in Piraeus. This initiative illustrates the sensitivity of the Propeller Club to environmental issues, and emphasises the club’s belief in the power and value of individual social responsibility. The annual International Coastal Cleanup Campaign is a program run under the auspices of the global NGO, Ocean Conservancy, coordinated by HELMEPA, the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association, in Greece.
